Apartment Hunting – Day One

I landed last night in Newark airport just half an hour behind schedule in spite of being delayed through Chicago by a whole hour and a half! Somebody ought to do something about the kind of effect bad weather in Chicago has on the flight schedules of the day – everything ends up in complete disarray. And of course, the fact that practically everybody in the country was going home for the Christmas vacation didn’t help things either! But enough complaining already. Sumanth came by in his cool Acura (of course) to pick me up and pretty soon we were heading home.

This afternoon I had appointments with 2 brokers in Hoboken. Sumanth’s Camry was originally supposed to be my mode of transport but unfortunately, it met with a small deer accident and so Sumanth figured getting a car from Enterprise made more sense. I set off only at noon for an appointment at 12 noon in Hoboken (Indian Stretchable Time finally catches up with me!) with expert directions from Sumanth himself (who is remarkably accurate, btw). As luck would have it, his directions were correct only upto the point I entered Jersey City. I ended up getting hopelessly lost very quickly and had to call Vidya up for help (she looked up my exact location in Mapquest and then told me where exactly to go while I drove around). I never quite made it to the first broker :-)

My second broker’s appointment was set for 2 pm. Thankfully enough, I made it in time for this one. The chap seemed rather dull and the apartments he showed me were really quite pathetic. The only apartments that seemed to be any good were the ones in the luxury high-rise buildings and they were rather expensive and still quite far away from the PATH station. Living there would mean an easy 1 hour commute to Manhattan everyday. I say, forget it. There’s no way I am doing that and still live in a crappy apartment.

As I began driving home, I decided to drive on River street and treat myself to some exquisite views of Manhattan.

So as it stands Hoboken is ruled out. Tomorrow I check out the cool Newport-Pavonia area in Jersey City since I hear so much about it. Stay tuned.
