Farewell to the Concorde

Even as a child, I was always fascinated by the prospect of flying in a plane at a speed faster than the speed of sound. Back then, when grown-ups would tell me all those tales of how fast it could go and how cool it was, I would actually dream of being able to fly on the Concorde someday.

But it looks like I won’t ever be able to do that. Today is the Concorde’s last flight as reported in an editorial in the New York Times

There’s also a nice article in The Independent.

It kinda feels sad, being an engineer, that an achievement in the history of mankind has to be brought to an end for what certainly seems like purely economical reasons. But who knows, someday engineers might build something far better!

Had the precise same thoughts. It broke my heart. As an engineer. Really hope to fly in it sometime – better successor or no better successor. It’s those drawings of the Concorde in the Encyclopedia that I’m attached to, not the concept of flying faster than sound. Maybe I will be on some 50th anniversary special commemorative flight! Just maybe! Doesn’t hurt to keep wishing. As an engineer.
