The Indian attitude to dealing with SARS

It is often said that Indian politicians make some of the stupidest statements possible and suffer from an acute ostrich-with-head-buried-in-the-sand syndrome. SARS, which is currently being reported about every minute in the news, has so far not quite made its presence really felt in India (but for a couple of reported cases). However, it seems that the Union Health Ministry is banking on the “high immunity” of Indians to not fall prey to the disease.


Even as SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) is turning uncomfortably
familiar for Indians, the Union health ministry is confident that the
strong immunity of the people in this country will successfully fight the
deadly virus.

“Immunity of the people in India is much higher than in other countries,”
Union health minister Sushma Swaraj told FE. Although some SARS cases in
India have shown positive lab tests, clinically they are not sick, Ms
Swaraj said in defence of her argument. This is despite more and more
cities emerging on the SARS radar every other day in India.

In other news, I finished wading through the slew of papers that I have to read for tomorrow’s Embedded Systems final exam. Now I just need to give everything a thorough revision and I should be done. I just hope I continue to have the luck that I traditionally have had in finals …
