The weekend

It is funny – I don’t think I remember having such a distinct line of separation between the work week and the weekend when I was back in India. And for some reason, it isn’t just me – all my friends here from back home have behave in exactly the same way.

Is there is something about the American way of life that makes everybody fall into this pattern of thinking about the weekdays and the weekend as reserved exclusively for different kind of activities ? Or is it just that back in India, I was always a student and when outside of class, I didn’t have to be sitting at my desk and pretending to do research work ? :-) For instance, if you ask somebody around here to do / plan something which involves anything even remotely outside of eating, going to school, sleeping or doing homework, the chances that you hear, “Oh let’s do it over the weekend !” are as high as 98% :-)

So when Vidya says, “Hey, let’s do our taxes !” I say, “Okay, over the weekend.”

Nonda asks, “Can we start driving lessons sometime ?”

I reply, “Sure, this weekend.”

Ron tells me, “Can you and Pavan work on the Boeing OEP test thing this weekend ?”

I say, “Sure.”

Now you know why I never get anything done during the weekends :-)

Anyhow, I need to name my car and I still haven’t done that yet. I have been racking my brains for some nice names but I can’t seem to settle on anything yet. I took the car to the Hindu temple in St. Louis on Friday evening to do the usual car puja which all Hindus do when they own a new car. The evening wasn’t without incident, of course. To do the puja, the priest said that I must go and get 4 lemons and a coconut. Vidya and I set off to find the nearest Schnucks and what a time we had trying to find one while Booze stayed behind. Fortunately enough for us, by the time we got back, even though it was 20 minutes past closing time for the temple, they were kind enough to wait for us and do the puja. I am glad it got done :-)

You should check out my car now with all the swastika symbols on it. Hope I am not mistaken for a neo-Nazi !

Weekdays vs weekends. I agree. The patter on life here is so fast that weekends are the only available days to live. The rest is work.
I don’t even really get weekends. Which means that life feels like an endless weekday. Which as a concept wouldn’t have been so bad in India. Here it’s a nightmare.
It’s Sunday, but my weekday has begun. Back to work.
