And the week is racing to a finish

It always intrigues me how a whole week passes by so quickly and I barely seem to feel the passage of time – of course, the onset of Friday makes me sit up and take notice of how I don’t seem to have done anything of consequence during the first half and that I better make up in time for the weekly lab meeting on Friday :-) I have to say that a Friday meeting is a terrific idea – it ensures that one actually works from Mon->Fri and does enough to talk about during the meeting too. I wonder if Ron had this in mind when he set a Friday date. If you had a Monday date, for instance, the tendency would be to promise yourself a lot of hardwork over the weekend and that tends to put pressure on your social life – which is precisely why I like to do steady work during the week :-)

Something else I have recently been upto is go back to singing Carnatic classical music. When I was much younger, my brother and I, showing a lot of promise, learnt Carnatic vocal for 2 years – but that had to be cut short because of studies becoming increasingly more time-consuming :-) Sometimes I wish I never had stopped learning – I could have learnt much more and perhaps become even better at singing than I presumably am now. The sad thing was the getting into IIT was more important and perhaps rightly so – you can always go back to music :-) The best part about being classically trained is how much of an edge it gives you over others who are not. All the time I was singing for my colege band [rock music and stuff, mind you], my classical training made it that much easier to pick up a whole lot of things – good rhythm sense, singing to scale and being able to transpose etc.

Anyway, the bottomline is that I recently started re-learning music from Vidya, who happens to be an extremely good and very well-trained classical singer and violinist, and I am enjoying learning so much more than I learnt the first time round.

My ‘Advanced Multi-Paradigm Software Development’ class is coming along pretty well. I really like the concept of Design Patterns very much – brings the element of engineering to an otherwise, in my opinion, very scientific discipline. Our next assignment aims to teach us the use of the Interceptor pattern so here I come !

Today’s Calvin and Hobbes strip is absolutely priceless :-)
