Here's to Scorpios

By the time this comes up, we shall be well into October 25 but since my days are separated by sleep cycles and not just the strokes of midnight, I shall pretend for the remainder of this blog entry that I am still in Oct 24th.

Today is Raj’s birthday. And since we are at it, I might as well give you a quick introduction : Raj is short for Rajeswari which is a name too long to pronounce even by Indian standards and I decided that I really didn’t have the patience to call her that. So I decided to call her Raj and well, it stuck. Of course, Raj is very much a male name but hehe, it doesn’t really matter – not to her anyways. So Raj is probably my best friend whom I have “grown up” with, right from my days at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras where we did our undergrad – she in Electrical Engg and me in Chemical Engg. Yep, that’s right – my undergrad was not in CS ;-)

Anyway, so we were talking about Raj and it so happens that today is her birthday! Happy Birthday Raj ! I wished her, of course, last night although it was an hour past midnight since I had quite forgotten that NYC is an hour ahead of us :-) Raj happens to be a Scorpio and believe me when I say that Scorpios are one breed I have certainly seen a lot of all what they are famous for and well, they fascinate me to say the least.

So what did I do today ? First of all, I am really happy to see that moving to MovableType has done my weblog loads of good. I am absolutely enjoying the loads of comments and all the fun – thanks everybody !

Spent most of the day fighting with gcj before I decided that the best way out was to just compile it from scratch from the 3.22 release and my poor Thinkpad nearly died trying to do it but well, it did manage to survive the ordeal and sure enough, I did manage to make some headway in compiling the libraries for FACET but there are more challenges – hmm.

Oh and before I go on – a clarification. The girl whom I call ‘Vidye’ goes by the real name of ‘Vidya’ and you shouldn’t think that I am making a spelling mistake. I merely pronounce the last vowel in her name differently – giving it a somewhat Sanskritized twist to it :-)

So Vidye went to the Med School today to attend a talk and got back only late in the afternoon, having not eaten anything at all. So I accompanied her to Mallincrokdt for her lunch and listened to her talk about protein folding :-) I think I am going to attend the talk by Levenspiel tomorrow – should be fun to listen to the man whose book I read back in undergrad. CSTRs, PFRs – what fun indeed :-)

Since it is already the 25th of October in India, I promptly called up Udaya, another significant Scorpio in my life and wished her – I think she was quite happy to be woken up from sleep for a change :-) Happy Birthday Udaya!

My dear brother Rahul as been upto a whole lot of things lately and his latest endeavour seems very exciting indeed. I don’t think I am at liberty to reveal it so until I get due permission, keep guessing :-)

And before I end for the day and turn in to catch some nice sleep, I must mention this incident. I really enjoy reading different people’s blogs since it is so much fun to read so many different perspectives and attitudes to life. One person I just happened to come across by chance is Amy. Now ordinarily, I would never expect to meet people whose blogs I read [I mean, it isn't so frequent] but this morning, as I was walking towards Cupples II from Brookings, I actually think I saw this same girl whose blog I read last night ! Woah !

And finally, here is what Booze sent me [it is a microdrive, probably the latest]:
